🛠️ Installation Tips

  • The "Press" Factor: These bearings come pre-installed in the carriers. However, if you ever need to replace the bearings again, always press on the outer race of the bearing. Pressing on the inner race will dimple the ball bearings and cause premature failure.

  • Axle Nut Torque: This is critical. For most Sportsman models, the rear axle nut should be torqued to $80\text{ lb-ft}$. An under-tightened nut allows the hub to "chatter" on the axle splines, which will quickly destroy both the new hub and your expensive CV axle.

  • Anti-Seize on Splines: Apply a thin layer of anti-seize lubricant to the CV axle splines before sliding the new carrier on. This prevents the aluminum hub from "welding" itself to the steel axle over time, making future repairs much easier.

  • Inspect the Bushings: While the carrier is removed, check the condition of your A-arm bushings. If the carrier is new but the bushings are worn, the rear end will still feel loose.

  • Cotter Pin Safety: Never reuse an old cotter pin on the axle nut. This kit uses high-torque components; a fresh cotter pin is your only insurance against the axle nut backing off during a ride.

🔍 Troubleshooting Guide

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Rear Wheel "Wobble" Worn bearing or loose axle nut. Jack up the ATV and shake the tire. If it moves but the A-arms don't, the bearing inside the carrier is shot.
Grinding/Chirping Noise Dry bearings or sand ingress. High-pressure washing often pushes water past the seals. If the noise changes with speed, the bearing races are pitted and need replacement.
Brake Rotor Rubbing Bearing failure causing "tilt." If the rear brake rotor is hitting the caliper bracket, the carrier bearing has likely collapsed, allowing the entire hub to sit at an angle.
Clicking During Turns Damaged carrier splines. If the hub is loose on the axle, it will "click" as the splines jump. Check the internal splines of the carrier for rounded edges.
Overheating Hub Over-torqued nut or lack of lube. If the hub is too hot to touch after a short ride, the bearing preload may be incorrect or the internal spacer is missing.
